Hormones Significant in 'Study and Tracing of Cancer Br PAUL F. ELLIS mnitwt imu hlMM wrltcrl New York, May 18 (U.B The hormones chemical substances h.t rnntrol the mechaniam ol the human body and determine aex characteristic! have been found to have a aignificance in potting cancer. Th different substances produced in tiny amounta by the " ' sex and other glanda follow a regular pattern in excretion from normal persona each day, but studiea at the Sloan-Ketterlng Institute for cancer research have shown there is a decided shift or change in the pattern when disease is in the body. There is such a pattern-shift that indicates cancer. Most significant in the shift is the presence of a "stranger" a hor mone that is rarely found in per sons not suffering disease, partic ularly those not suffering cancer. Pond Submits Winning-Poster 1 A resident of Salem is among l the winning contestants in the t international humane poster contest of the Latham Founda- tlon for the promotion of hu ; mane education, it was recently ! announced by the organization ' from headquarters in Oakland, ! California. j E. O. Pond, of 640 Chemeketa ! street. Salem, was awarded a i certificate of merit by the ', Judges, for a poster entered in Group VI, for professional art ' ists. Mr. Pond's poster showed 'marked artistic ability and or! i finality of subject. Many entries in this 24th an nual contest of the Latham . Foundation were received from foreign countries, among them l England. Austria, noiiana, jan- f- ada, Java, the Philippine Islands ' and the Canal Zone. ' Art is a universal language and through these poster con tests the foundation hopes to do Its part in building international friendship. Queen Charlotte Lebanon Festival Queen of the annual straw berry festival at Lebanon will be Charlotte Pease, Corvallis high school senior. She is a blonde, five feet five inches tall and weight 110 pounds. Queen Charlotte waa born at Albany Nov. 10, 1930 and moved to Cor vallis In 1942. Selection of the queen and the royal court was made at a dance at the Cottonwoods dance pavil ion Wednesday night with seven girls competing for the honor. Princesses will be Mary Ann Turner, Lebanon; Marvis Peter sen, Albany; Joanne Sefert, Scio; Joy Kilgore, Brownsville; Norma Latimer, Sweet Home and Janet Corbitt, Halsey. Coronation ceremonies . will be held June S at 10 o'clock with the festival parade to fol low and a 5000 pound strawber ry shortcake to be served at noon. Lebanon Man Injured Lebanon, May 19 Albert Grohe, Lebanon, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and his automobile demolished when a 25-foot log eight feet through the base, slipped from a log truck driven by Glen Rid dle, Sweet Home, as he made a turn at a downtown intersection Wednesday. Tht log also broke an electric power pole before it crashed onto the Grohe automo bile which was passing. The Sloan-Ketterlng scientists have made their preliminary conclusions after almost 10 years of laboratory and clinical tests. Examinations of urinary excre tions of scores of persons some old, some young have been made. Techniques of analyzing and obtaining the "fingerprints" of the various hormone excre tions have been developed. The newest trick of obtaining the "finger-prints" of the individual hormone substances is the ex posure of them to infra-red light. The procedure brings out their individual structures and makes them easy to identify. Through use of the new tech niques, the scientists obtained the "finger-print" of the partic ular strange hormone that shows up in most cancer cases either before detection of the disease or during the course of the dis ease. The "Cancer" hormone deriva tive probably comes from the adrenals, two small glands lo cated on top of the kidneys and glands whose proper func tion is necessary for normal life in the human being. In the examination of excre tions from 10 men suffering can cer of the prostate, the hormone was found in nine cases; in four out of four cases of cancer of the larynx; in two out of two cases of cancer of breast male; in four out of four cases in can cer of the stomach; in one out of one in cancer of the cervix; and four out of four cases of lympatic leukemia. The compound has been found in other diseases, so it is not now considered specific for cancer. But in 15 normal males, it was found in only one. In nine normal females, it was found in only one, Sloan-Kettering scien tists are now following up those two cases to determine whether they ultimately develop cancer, In one case, the strange hormone ("was found in a woman apparent ly in. good health. Three years later she developed cancer, was operated on and Is in good health today six years after the operation. (Next: Hormonal Symphony) (CoprrtlAt UU by DnIWd FtMJ) Capital Journal.
